Simple Beginnings The common misconception of all sinful people is that they derive from a very troubled childhood, or were born into a rather depressing household. Factors such as an abusive father, or a drunken mother were proven to be some of the influences in a criminal's life. However, in the case of Vesper Chase we are speaking of someone who is more than a criminal, someone who spies and betrays, someone who seeks and kills, someone who causes terror in order to get a point across. Before assumptions are made as to how she grew up, it is fair to say that she was born into quite the loving household.
It was not her own family that led her to the darkness, but instead the world around her.
Robert Chase was originally an officer at Gotham City Police Department (GCPD), however after learning that his wife, Vanessa Chase had given birth to a baby girl, he decided to move elsewhere in hopes of raising the child in a
safe environment. The family moved to New York City, where Robert enrolled in the NYPD and where Vesper Chase grew up.
Her childhood years were full of wonder and excitement. To keep her busy, her parents enrolled her in a martial arts class and gymnastics class. Actually, her father thought it would be wise for her to begin learning how to fight now since he hoped that she would follow his footsteps and someday become a lieutenant police officer. By the age of seven, Vesper was a blackbelt in Aikido, and Tae Kwon Do, she was a brown belt in both Kickboxing and Jujitsu. Her gymnastics coach often said that she was on her way to become an Olympic Level gymnast.
Life was simple for her during her early years, and there was nothing to complain about. Even her younger brother (who was 2 years younger than her) was fortunate to live like she had, and both Hector and Vesper got along quite well as children.
She was a bright young girl, gifted with exceptional grades, and had proven to be quite the writer at a young age. Vesper was on the road to success, everyone knew it, and they could see it.
Complications AriseA family vacation to Bolivia one summer proved to make quite the impression on the Chase family. During their family outing, both Vesper and Hector were kidnapped, or abducted by an infamous crime ring in South America who abducted American children and held them at ransom. The people were desperate, and the young were vulnerable. Put two and two together, and you have the perfect motive for committing such crimes.
Vesper and Hector were held for ransom, trapped within a “dungeon” along with other American children who hoped they would be returned to their parents. As they all learned, if the money demanded was not received, then the child was killed. Vesper and Hector could only hope that their parents would meet the demands that these criminals made.
Unfortunately, they could not. The criminals agreed, that since they had had kidnapped both Vesper and Hector, the Chase family had a second chance. They had used up their first chance, and the consequence caused the death of Hector. Heartbroken, Vesper was forced to watch as they killed her own brother so she could retell the tale to her parents, giving them proof that this had happened.
Robert and Vanessa tried to get the money to retrieve their daughter. But a small revolution in Bolivia forced them to return to the states, leaving Vesper in the clutches of her kidnappers. She was trapped for a few more days, when finally one day she was fortunate enough to escape from the underground dungeon. Her escape also freed the other children, but now Vesper, at the age of 10 was an
abandoned child in an unknown city. She became a poor child on the streets, trapped in a violent world with angry people who fought against an angry government.
Life became exceptionally hard for her, she was only lucky that the skills that she harnessed at a young age proved to be a great help for her. She was forced to become a petty criminal for food, money, and shelter. Vesper spent a few weeks on her own, until finally a female terrorist, who was part of the revolutionary group in Bolivia found a sick Vesper on the streets and took her in as her own.
South American TerrorMadra Cortez took care of Vesper for two years, nurturing and bringing the young girl back to health in a matter of days. Although she did not know it, Vesper was surrounded by a group of extremists and terrorists. She spent most of her time around these group of people, and had become indulged completely in their work and what they did. Their cause was simply to fight off an unfair government that ignored its impoverished people, Vesper witnessed with her own eyes corruption upon a nation.
Often times her father had told her that people who acted in violence were criminals, but these people weren't criminals, they were the victims here. The government was the criminals, and they were giving their own people no other choice BUT to act in violence.
Vesper's mind, it began to grow, it became consumed by the very idea of terrorism and how in certain situations it was right. She grew among the terrorists, and she became one of them. Her ideals began to expand, and a few months later she actually began to help spread the word of another revolution through writings that she made for the terrorist group.
Her work was inspirational, it was motivating, and she actually became a key member of the team. Sure she didn't do any of the field work, but she did help in anyway she could. Although it wasn't as forceful as she would have liked it to be, it still got a point across.
Vesper and Madra formed a close personal relationship, where Vesper went as far as asking Madra to help her return to her parents. Madra promised she would do so, and after two years, she helped Vesper return to America.
Stowing her away on a cargo ship that was bound to New York City, Marda bid farewell to Vesper wishing her a safe travel and a bright future.
Little did Marda know that she had changed Vesper for life.
A Bitter Family ReunionVesper returned safe and sound after a month of stowing away on a Cargo ship. She resurfaced, filthy, sickly, and meek. But these ailments, they did not stop her from returning home. Vesper ran into her Manhattan apartment, expecting a warm welcome home from her loving parents.
Unfortunately, that was the last thing that her own home had to offer. She returned to an estranged mother who had remarried, and to the news of her father who had been shot while on duty. Apparently her family had been torn, and her mother had fallen into a strange depressive state, becoming quite submissive and vulnerable to her new husband.
Richard Rand at first denied Vesper, however after her mother had begged him to allow her only daughter to live with them he finally approved, providing that Vesper got her own job and worked to earn a room in this house. Vesper was enraged by these new changes that she had come back to. She was only thirteen by this time, and as much as she would have liked to run away, she couldn't, she would not abandon her mother. Not after she had been separated from her for so long.
Life Back in the CityVesper enrolled into Bard High School, a prestigious high school located in Manhattan that worked with highly motivated and scholastically strong students. Bard High School willingly accepted her with her exceptional grades as well as her perfect score on her preliminary exams. Her interviews and essays were as the principal put it, “One of a kind”.
There, Vesper herself was rather estranged and alienated. It wasn't a physical appearance factor, but more so her own thoughts and ideas that drove people away. Most said she was a bit too extreme, or had too radical ideas. She was isolated by her own peers based solely on her ingenuity, her ideas and the way she acted.
Nevertheless, this did not stop Vesper from joining key clubs like the “Bardvark”, the school newspaper, and the Politicizer, the Book Club and the Archery Team, the swim team, the track team and the gymnastics team. . Her most notable work was within the school newspaper, where she dominated a whole page, entitling it the “Exposé”, a section completely dedicated to her radical opinions about the school and its system as well as on the social norms present within the school, and other things that she found wrong with the school. The reason the section was never removed was merely due to popularity. Students praised her writing and congratulated her on her work. Her work went as far as winning a prize for the school newspaper given by the state. She was a powerful writer, and a d**n good journalist who got down and dirty on all the scandals that went on in the school. She was also exceptional in the athletics department, most notably her proficient skill at Archery. Her coach was amazed by her almost perfect marksmanship when she first joined the team, and over time, her own targeting skills became perfect. Swimming, Track and Gymnastics were no challenge for her, she proved to be faster, stronger and more flexible than any of her competitors or team mates.
She was a nice addition to the school, but, Vesper was not satisfied. Her own ingenuity was far greater than the simple academics that she covered in school. She was bored, discontent, her mind and body began to thirst for more. Academics, social contests, all these high school factors were boring compared to what she lived through when she was younger. The sound of gunfire and powerful speakers voicing over many other people. Demands being made, powerful groups moving forward, this was what Vesper missed, this is what Vesper wanted.
She stopped going to school very frequently, instead lodging herself in libraries and studying millions and millions of different subjects. She expanded her writing abilities, she studied philosophy, psychology, law, government, the list went on. Her mind became a vast library, becoming consumed by different subjects.
Additionally, she also learned that she had quite the analytical mind, she learned that she was quite good at deciphering or decoding messages. Vesper had even grown to love cryptology as well and at 15 became a master of it. Her mind could decipher just about any coded message, and she could ideally solve and use complex algorithms to get answers that she wanted. It was something that she had taught herself, something that she was proud of. She became the master of her own mind.
The PolarisVesper may not have been that social in school, but she was active on the internet. In fact, most of her time was spent on the internet, either doing research or talking with individuals that agreed with her ideas and thoughts. None of it ever got personal until one day, she ventured into a chatroom entitled “the Polaris”. It was a simple mistake for Vesper, and she was ready to leave the private chatroom when suddenly she realized that the discussion was between current students at Bard High School.
Intrigued, Vesper or as known on the internet as SurViv3R joined the chat, and gradually made friends whose faces she did not even know.
The Polaris consisted of six members, the lead member being Shokwave, Digital Hack t3, the Reality Bug, Zen, X-fact0r, and finally SurViv3R. All six were unhappy students at Bard, who had quite the extreme ideals. After weeks of talking, all six members finally met face to face and were prepared to bring forth their own ideas.
Their first act, which was slightly minor was setting smoke bombs within the school kitchen in retaliation to the poor food. Next was the flooding of the boys and girls bathrooms for their untidiness. The group even went as far as starting a fire in the basement for the school's ignorance towards kids who were bullied in the basements.
They were quite the terror in the school, and the best thing was that no one knew who they were.
It wasn't until their plans had gone as far as bugging and setting tiny explosives in the Principal's office did they all fall. Mary Simmons or Digital Hack became fearful and sang like a canary to school security. The remaining five members were arrested and expelled from the school.
The Polaris broke up, and were left to go attend separate schools. But this did not bother Vesper, for the last two years of her high school life, she had one hell of a ride, and she enjoyed every bit of it.
Working with the Polaris and spreading terror around the school was one of the most fulfilling moments in Vesper's life.
A Death in the FamilyGetting kicked out of one of the best High School's in New York City completely enraged Richard Rand to the point where he actually went as far as hitting Vesper. Vesper had been a victim to Richard's verbal abuse, she had held her own when he hit her mother, but when he hit her, she totally lost it.
Returning from the precinct, Richard slammed his fist into the side of her head, knocking Vesper out for a few hours. When she awoke, she found herself being led by some unknown force or will to her father's belongings that her mother had keep. As she rummaged through the material possessions, she came across his firearm and exactly three bullets. Loading the weapon, Vesper then moved back down to the living room, meeting face to face with an unsuspecting Richard Rand.
As Vesper stood before him, she listened as he demanded that she move away from the Television. In response, she shot him three times, in the head, the jugular and the right heart chamber. Something she had picked up through her readings.
Vanessa Chase awoke to the gunshots and much to her shock found her daughter standing over Richard's body a mad look in her eyes.
Vesper had killed a man once, and for the first time. This would most certainly not be the last.
Vanessa Chase took the blame for the murder of Richard Rand, knowing that her daughter did not once again deserve to be locked away. Vesper herself was left on her own, and finished her high school education, and received a full scholarship for NYU.
College LifeNYU did prove to present its challenges to Vesper. She decided to double major in both Journalism and Politics and her minors being Computer Science and Mathematics. College life was slightly normal for Vesper, she had her freedom, and she was learning what she wanted.
Although, it wasn't THAT normal. She did join a few rebellious groups who wanted to make a few clear statements around the city and hold petitions here and there. She enjoyed the rebellious bit, but she wasn't very happy with their passive aggressive methods. She was willing to go
all the way with her tactics, one time going as far as gassing a whole crowd of people who opposed them. The group that she was in then disbanded her, deeming her methods too aggressive for their liking.
Frankly, Vesper didn't think that a point could not be made without a little violence.
She continued her education, leaving time to study on the side, and also finding time to interact with people who agreed to her views. She even joined the lacrosse and martial arts teams.
NYU was the highlight of Vesper's life, where she expanded her views and even went as far as learning how to make her own homemade bombs. A separate group known as the
Arsonists helped her with her techniques, perfecting her own creations.
Vesper as always made sure to stay with the newspapers, even going as far as joining an underground newspaper in lower Manhattan that worked on exposing the scandalous nature of the city. She became quite the bug, and the mysterious “V” became notorious for bringing out the truth and the worst of people.
Could it be Love? After College, Vesper received a job at the New York Times. She had mistakenly bumped into one of the writers there who immediately recognized her from an article she recently wrote, and set up an interview for her. The chief was astounded by her personality and her determination, as well as her alluring writing style, and immediately put her up for the job.
Her job started out as simple as it could be. Vesper having to take on rather bland articles. After a while, she began to pick things up on her own, and soon she had an article on the front page. Life was going good for her at this point, but that didn't mean that she was not straying away from her
terrorist ideals.
She continued her work with her rebellious legions, and even meant a fellow member that worked among the many people in the NY times.
Kevin Waters was a rather sharp young man, with a mean streak, as well as a very cynical personality. He was quite the looker and since Vesper had joined the team he and her had been quite competitive. What turned out to be heated competition, evolved into heated love. Kevin and Vesper began to date, and 6 months later he proposed to her. The two were married. Ace reporters, their wedding made it in the newspaper.
After their marriage, both Kevin and Vesper discovered they were due to have a child.
Additionally, Vesper won the “Caliber” award for one of her more recent articles. Now becoming embedded in history for her journalistic work. Time continued on, and Vesper and Kevin were chosen to act as field reporters in Lebanon where a terrorist attack was taking place.
Vesper was enthusiastic about the idea of being surrounded by terrorists again, she immediately accepted the story. Kevin however was a bit reluctant and tried to bring up the child. Vesper however made it clear that she wanted to take on this story, and Kevin could not deny her what she wanted.
Close to the HeartOnce in Lebanon, Vesper was already on the field taking her notes and watching the whole event take place before her. This is exactly what she had been working for in life, this was exactly what she wanted. However, she would learn that her own desires would be the end of one part of her life.
As promised, the baby was to be due, and Vesper went into labor. They took refuge in a hospital that was protected by the Lebanese government. There, Vesper gave birth to a beautiful baby son, whom they named Lucius. Vesper was overjoyed once she saw the healthy young baby, and she was ready to take care of him and love him with all her heart.
Unfortunately, she would never receive the chance. Later that night, the hospital was bombed due to a terrorist attack. Someone, Vesper managed to survive through the rubble, however, her son, was already lost and Kevin, he died in her arms.
This marked the turning point in her life, when Vesper would push aside the life she had before, to pursue the one that she had always wanted.
The Journalist that DisappearedVesper Chase, ace reporter of the
New York Times, winner of the
Caliber Award was reported dead after the bombing of the hospital that she was staying at in Lebanon. The 22 year old woman was now a ghost of the past, Vesper, would have to agree with this.
She stayed in Lebanon for awhile, disguising herself as a member of the terrorist and going as far as running her own group. This was indeed the life for her, raiding buildings, planting bombs, rapid fire, she was one hell of a terrorist, and she wasn't even one of them yet.
Her motive, pointless destruction to ease her own inner pain. Immeasurable havoc to quench her sadistic thirst. She wanted to watch big men go down, in ash and flame. She wanted to watch the world fall.
